The workshop offers elementary school children demonstrative and interactive activities that explain on the one hand the main causes of global warming and on the other the real and observable changes that occur on Earth, what we call the impacts of climate change. In particular:
– Focus on the main causes of climate change, i.e. greenhouse gas emissions, in particular carbon dioxide. We will dedicate a part to countering the misinformation behind many climate myths, for example the fact that natural processes, which always influence the earth’s climate, can explain the climate changes that occurred after the start of the industrial revolution. The way in which the activities will be carried out will be through small-scale scientific experiments that can be extrapolated to a larger scale and projections of videos and infographics, in which boys and girls will be able to actively participate. An example would consist of trapping carbon dioxide produced with a simple chemical reaction and measuring the temperature of the air, in order to observe that the air warms more the more carbon dioxide it contains.
– Focus on indicators of the impact of climate change, such as the increase in acidity of the oceans, the melting of glaciers or the increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves, droughts and floods. The activities will follow the same procedure described above. An example would be to simulate the absorption of carbon dioxide and the increase in acidity in the oceans. We will also show visualizations of the change over time in some of the main climate indicators, such as sea level rise.
