Did you want the bicycle? Now ride!

Mathematics on two wheels

By: Prof. Lucio Cadeddu

Einstein, a great bicycle enthusiast, said “Das Leben ist wie ein Fahrrad. Man muß sich vorwärts bewegen, um das Gleichgewicht nicht zu verlieren” aka “Life is like a bicycle. You have to keep going so you don’t lose your balance.”

The bicycle, an apparently simple object, is in reality an extremely complex mechanical system, the functioning of which has only recently been understood in relation to its miraculous balance. Then there are the ratios, geometries, the choice of the most efficient pedaling frequency and the effect of wind and air resistance. In this short conference, all these aspects that make the bike a wonderful outdoor ecological laboratory will be analysed, in a informative way!

Prof. Lucio Cadeddu

Professor for the Analysis 1 course (12 CFU) for the Bachelor’s Degree in Physics. Member of the National Group for Mathematical Analysis, Probability and their Applications (GNAMPA) of the INdAM (differential equations and dynamic systems section). Responsible for transparency for the CdS in Mathematics. Creator and scientific director of the dissemination project M=M(c,t)+m [Mathematics, Cinema, Theater + Music] financed by INDAM with resolution of 24/7/2018. He carries out research in Mathematical Analysis, ordinary differential and partial differential equations, and their applications to biology, medicine and physics. He deals with the links between mathematics and other cultural areas (anthropology, psychology, sociology, art and music) and with the history of mathematics.
