Gender and STEM: Understanding Inequality, Building Change

Gender and STEM: Understanding Inequality, Building Change

2025 Donna di Scienza conference and award ceremony

By: Sara Pirrone, INFN Catania Section, President of the Equal Opportunities Committee of the SIF

Despite the progress made in recent decades, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines continue to reflect significant gender disparities. Women are still underrepresented, especially in senior positions, and face often invisible but deeply rooted obstacles and challenges.

This talk will begin with the numbers that demonstrate this gap, seeking to understand the causes of this imbalance, analyze the consequences for society and science, and explore concrete solutions to imagine a future of science that is truly accessible to all.

The 2025 Donna di Scienza Award Ceremony, presented by Maria Del Zompo, neuroscientist and professor emeritus of pharmacology at the University of Cagliari, and Carla Romagnino, honorary president of the ScienzaSocietàScienza association.

Following a conversation between Susi Ronchi, Gi.U.Li.A. journalist, and the winners.
