Carbon: From the Graphite Pencil to the Telescope

Allotropes of carbon: graphite, diamond, and fullerene

By: Maria Cristina Mantega, Loreta Cocco, Ilaria Bellini (IC Porcu Satta Quartu S. Elena) and Guido Pegna

Carbon is one of the most versatile and fascinating elements in the universe. This workshop will guide visitors on a scientific journey from graphite and its common uses to the revolutionary fullerenes used in the construction of advanced space instruments.
Visitors will discover the conductivity of graphite, the hardness of diamond, and the myriad properties of fullerene.
The activity aims to stimulate curiosity about science, demonstrating how such a common element can have an extraordinary impact both in everyday use and in the new frontiers of technological development.
