Quantum physics in five ideas

By: Piero Martin, University of Padua

This book doesn’t pretend to transform readers into scientists (if only it were that easy!), but it will allow them to marvel and revel in the wonder of one of the most fascinating achievements of the human intellect, through five fundamental ideas that underlie the quantum revolution: discontinuity, identity, future, indeterminacy, and relationship. Five ideas imbued with humanity, because few branches of physics have managed to encompass so many aspects of our lives in one of the most ingenious constructions of the intellect.
In five one-act plays, accessible to everyone, we will discover the cornerstones of quantum architecture, which shape so many applications that have changed and will change the world and improve the environment, from lasers to medicine, from quantum computers to solar cells.

Piero Martin

Piero Martin is a full professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Padua, currently seconded to the “B. Segre” Interdisciplinary Center of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and a visiting professor at Columbia University in New York. He studies fusion as an energy source. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, he has been the scientific director of major international projects and now coordinates the physics activities of DTT, Italy’s new large-scale fusion experiment. He writes for “Domani” and “La Stampa” and has won the Fiuggi Scienza Prize. He was a finalist for the 2018 Galileo Prize and winner of the National Prize for Scientific Dissemination, Science section; he is also a finalist for the 2022 Galileo Prize.
