Reconstruction and reworking of some mathematical machines from classical antiquity to the eighteenth century

With guided tour of the assets of the Biblioteca Universitaria

By: Giorgio Erby

Creation of some mathematical machines starting from information deduced from ancient texts, both from an IT and mechanical point of view. The analyzed texts range from classical antiquity to the early eighteenth century. In some cases the described machines have been “perfected or reinvented” in order to recover what was proposed by the ancient authors, given the objective we set ourselves in creating a workshop aimed at students. The machines have made it possible to “materialize” some mathematical concepts. The mathematical machines workshop will be held in the eighteenth-century room of the Biblioteca Universitaria of Cagliari, in via Università.
