For some time the dream of creating intelligent artificial creatures similar to us has stimulated the challenges of engineers, enriched the speculations of philosophers, aroused the concerns of sociologists and bioethicists and exalted the creativity of novelists and filmmakers. On the border between science and science fiction, on the basis of their research experience and with the spirit of the “humanist” engineer, attentive both to the implications of science and technology and to the many facets of culture, Giuseppe Anerdi and Paolo Dario propose a journey together to these traveling companions. Some of them are already present in our daily lives and we almost don’t notice them. Others, perhaps more extravagant, will be added along the way, giving credence to those techno-utopias which are not just excursions into the fantasy of the post-human: today there are already those who believe in them, have planned them and have dedicated significant financial resources to them committing its credibility. It will be up to us to govern these authentic companion robots, shape and direct their talents, so that it is legitimate to imagine an alliance between the human species and intelligent machines to face together the great challenges of knowledge, dignity and defense of the planet.
