Discovering DiSB research

A cura di: Iole Tomassini, Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Cagliari

The activities are organized by teachers from the Biomedical Sciences department with long experience in study, research, teaching and dissemination and orientation experiences in the school environment. The interactive workshops will be accessible to primary and secondary school students but also to a heterogeneous audience of visitors. There will also be activities specifically aimed at pre-school children. The teachers will guide visitors through the experiences and will be available, during the interactive activity, to answer possible questions. The researchers will present their scientific research to visitors through interactive workshops which will show, in the form of a game, different DiSB study topics.

1. Microorganisms at work 45 min Visitors will carry out experiments with pollutant-degrading microorganisms and plastic-eating insects. For the little ones, coloring pages will be provided that represent the different biotechnologies.
2. Who killed the cells? 30 min Visitors will be able to treat cell cultures with different substances. By observing the effect under the microscope it will be possible to evaluate the degree of toxicity of each substance, stimulating the observer to identify who killed the cells.
3 From the invisible to the visible 30 min visitors will discover how the brain works by observing slides on the nervous system under the microscope.
4. Discovering the human body 45 min Researchers will accompany visitors on a splendid journey to discover the human body through illustrations from the Museum Collection of anatomical waxworks by Clemente Susini and anatomical models.
5. Tastes at the table? The answer is in the genes 45 min The sensory workshop will teach you to recognize the main gustatory qualities. Through the use of images, it will be possible to identify the fungiform taste buds, i.e. the sensory structures involved in gustatory perception
6. Simulation of vision during the use of psychoactive substances 45 min The interactive activity will use glasses that simulate vision under the influence of alcohol and other psychoactive substances. You will be asked to follow a route with and without glasses, complete with obstacles and changes in direction, activities that require coordination and attention.
