The right to a just city

The right to a just city

UN Agenda 2030 | Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 13)

By: Maurizio Memoli (University of Cagliari)

The lesson aims to explore the conditions of unequal distribution of opportunities for different individuals and social groups (minorities, migrants, marginalized people, disabled people, women, etc.). The concept of the “right to the city” traditionally proposed by Lefebvre remains the reference point. Spatial justice is identified as a discriminating factor in the various avenues of inquiry surrounding “socio-spatial inclusiveness” (who can use a given space and who cannot); in processes of territorialization (who can live there); in the accessibility of public spaces (who can access them); in environmental issues (how to safeguard them); and so on.
Experiences, testimonies, analyses, and insights into the forms of discrimination and stigmatization that shape contemporary space, particularly with regard to disabled people, will be presented through the presentation of the book “La città autistica” by Alberto Vanolo (Einaudi, 2024).
